Rolling dunes of the Wahiba Sands at sunset

Wahiba Sands

Oman’s sea of dunes

The Wahiba Sands, officially the Sharqiya Sands, is a sea of dunes stretching roughly 180 km from north to south and up to around 80 km wide, some of them over 100 metres high. Their colours shift from honey to deep orange as the sun moves, and Bedouin families still herd camels and goats around the edge of the sands.

The main access point is the town of Al Wasil, about two and a half to three hours from Muscat. From there, 4x4 tracks lead into the dunes to a string of desert camps, from simple Arabian tents to luxurious lodges. On the way, the spring-fed pools of Wadi Bani Khalid are one of Oman’s loveliest swimming spots.

Top things to do at Wahiba Sands

Watch sunset from a dune ridge

Climb to the top of a high dune in the late afternoon and watch the shadows lengthen across the sands. It is quiet, vast and unforgettable.

Spend a night in a desert camp

Camps serve dinner under the stars, often with a campfire; the sky away from city lights is remarkable. Wake early for sunrise over the dunes.

Visit a Bedouin family

Many tours stop at a Bedouin home for kahwa and dates, with a chance to see camels and hear about desert life.

Swim in Wadi Bani Khalid

Year-round pools of clear green water between rocks and palms, with a small cave to explore. It is easily reached by paved road.

How to get to Wahiba Sands

  • By car: about 2.5–3 hours from Muscat to Al Wasil or Bidiyah. Driving on sand needs a 4x4 and experience; most camps offer to collect you from the edge of the sands.
  • With a tour: day trips and overnight safaris from Muscat include the dunes and Wadi Bani Khalid.

Insider tips

  • Do not attempt to drive into the dunes without 4x4 experience — reduce tyre pressure and follow the camp’s directions, or arrange a pickup.
  • Nights in winter are chilly — bring a warm layer.
  • Carry plenty of water, sun protection and closed shoes for the hot sand.
  • Swim modestly in Wadi Bani Khalid and avoid it on public holidays, when it gets crowded.
