Royal Opera House Muscat

Arabia’s grand stage

The Royal Opera House Muscat opened in October 2011 with a production of Puccini’s Turandot, fulfilling Sultan Qaboos’s lifelong love of classical music. Clad in pale stone and set in formal gardens in Shatti Al Qurum, it blends Omani fort architecture with Islamic arches, and inside it is all carved teak, marble and gold leaf.

It stages a full international season — opera, ballet, symphony orchestras, jazz, world music and Arabic performers — and the adjoining Opera Galleria has upmarket shops and restaurants. Even without a ticket, the building is worth seeing on a guided tour.

Take a guided tour

Daytime guided tours visit the foyers and, when there is no rehearsal, the auditorium with its wooden latticework and seat-back subtitle screens. Tours run on most days; check the Opera House website for current times and fees.

See a performance

The season runs roughly from September to May. Tickets are often reasonable by international standards and a night at the opera in Muscat is a memorable, very Omani experience. Book ahead for big productions.

The arcaded galleria beside the Opera House has cafés and restaurants, a nice spot for coffee after a tour or dinner before a show.
